The Giant Gingerbread Man in Yandina, Queensland

Run, run as fast as you can, to see the Giant Gingerbread Man! And then run, run a bit further to see another Giant Gingerbread Man.

That’s right, Biggies, you get double the delicious fun when you visit the world-famous Buderim Ginger Factory in Yandina, because there are TWO of these big, burly, biscuity boys!

That should be enough to satiate the appetite of even the hungriest Big Thing afficionado.

The first Ginderbread Man can be found in a lovely sunny spot near the front of the park, guarding the gateway to the legendary Taste of Ginger Tour. Gingers usually burn to a crisp in the sultry Queensland sun, but this lad revels in it.

The second Ginger Giant is, more sensibly, tucked away beneath the rainforest canopy in the belly of the park, sheltered by a cavalcade of umbrellas. Which reminds me, I have heaps of good jokes about brollies – but they usually go over people’s heads!

Like most gingers, the towering twins are even-tempered, happy, and not at all dead-eyed or soulless. In fact, with their impish grins and jovial caps, these towering treats look good enough to eat.

Don’t eat them, though, because these Gingerbread Men are made of fibreglass and metal. So be a smart cookie and stick to the regular gingerbread men sold inside the gift shop.

Let the good times (sausage) roll

Whilst the Giant Gingerbread Men are undoubtedly the highlights of any trip to the Buderim Ginger factory, there’s so much more to see and do. Best of all, entry is free, so you don’t need much dough.

You know, like how there’s dough in gingerbread men. And… moving on.

With the tangy zest of ginger hanging in the subtropical air, it’s a pleasure to wander through the verdant gardens, stopping at ginger-themed cafes and stores. Honestly, if you can put ginger in, on or under something, you can get it here.

There’s so much for the kiddies, with an un-bee-lievably cute bee-shaped jumping castle, several playgrounds, and even a boat ride through a magical, puppet-filled world.

If your footsies get tired from all that traipsing around, just hop aboard whimsical Ginger Train. This leisurely 15-minute trip explores the history of the local ginger industry and, more importantly, provides glimpses of the Gingerbread Men. Toot, toot, all aboard!

The food on offer is gingerrific, with everything from ginger beer battered fish and chips to burgers dripping with ginger jam. Do not, under any circumstances, leave without biting into one of the Ginger Factory’s world-famous sausage rolls. With buttery pastry, zesty meat, and a hint – just a hint! – of farm fresh ginger, your tastebuds will think they’ve died and gone to ginger heaven.

Two Big Gingerbread Men, a flavourful feast and some umbrellas? What a grand day out!
